Marcelino: "We were far superior to Real Madrid"
Marcelino García Toral hailed his side's performance against Real Madrid in his post-match press conference, and rightly so. The VCF coach was delighted with an impressive performance that helped the team go 17 games without defeat.
The game
“I've had the feeling all season that we could have taken more points, and that we should have won more games, but we have struggled to score goals. The same thing happened today. We had several clear chances to kill the game off, but what I'll take away from this game is the way we played, and how superior we were to the opposition. We are very satisfied with the performance, spirit and ambition of the players."
Outplaying Real Madrid
"Real Madrid dominated the opening minutes, in which we lacked precision, but we were always in control of the game. I think that we were far superior to Real Madrid, and my feeling is that we deserved to have won by a bigger margin. They barely created chances, we defended very well -as we almost always do-, we had the ball and we created a lot of danger."
High performance against top sides
"We've always been close to the 'big' sides, and our results against them have generally been close, apart from last season against Real Madrid. In terms of the final stretch of the season, we aren't favourites and we should continue to have the same hard work and humility. The calendar is very difficult, with many games against direct rivals, and every match will be tough.
"We're very satisfied with the level of our play. If we don't have any injuries, we will be closer to the aim of getting into the Champions League. We've been scoring more goals for a few months now, which makes us play with more confidence and an advantage on the scoreboard. We've already scored more goals in the second half of the season than in the first. That translates into good results."
